Yup, these are both 2-door coupes with 5x114.3 bolt patterns. And uh, the fuel filler cap is on the same side too? I don’t see any other similarities...
Even Mondays count as MR2sday when you daily one! I’ve got some free time, AMA about cars, car culture, car ownership, autocross, car design, etc...

I take it you had the mr2 repainted?

Yup, that’s not a factory color. It looked pretty bad when I first got it, so I figured it deserved something bright if I was going to pay for a repaint.
Original (Called “Nautical Blue”)
Revised (Inspired by Porsche Miami Blue)
In direct sunlight, it confuses cameras because it’s so bright. The above shot was on auto white balance, no filter.

Whats a ballpark figure on the cost?

Baseline was $400 but I paid a little more for some bodywork too. Some areas of the stock paint were cracked all the way through to the metal. Bad sun damage can happen if parked outside for years in the desert...
The paint job is the best return on any money I’ve put into a car. Very much worth it.

It looks really good, that’s pretty affordable. I always assumed that paint jobs cost a fortune.

I’ve seen stories of high-end paint jobs costing 6 figures... It was a bit of a gamble to buy the cheapest paint job local to me, but it exceeded all expectations. Went from measuring months per compliment (“whoa that’s a nice car!”) to compliments per DAY. It’s really transformed the car :D

When I get ready to buy one can I come and test drive yours to see if I want one?

The sc400 I’ve got has mismatched paint, oxidization, and small dents. I’d like to fix the dents and have it resprayed in Ford Frosted Glass metallic. I imagine metallic paint will cost more but if I can make it happen for less than $1500 It might end up being in the cards.

Beautiful color, shame it’s not factory. Still cool though!
I’m going to make a post soon where I froth over my MR2 because holy shit it makes my life better. I “daily” it too though I definitely don’t drive daily.
Hope yours gives you half as much joy ;)

The car only gets more fun the more I drive it. Coilovers and new suspension bushings are getting installed this week, could take it from “super fun” to “I just spent a whole DAY just driving around.” The shocks have been entirely useless since I bought it, so actual damping should be a nice improvement :)

Are you on the west coast? Mine gets coilover suspension this week so it’ll ride a little different than stock examples.

Great! Great.
I’m in the city now for the first time in my life so it’s all city roads, no more country twisties. But the MR2 still loves it. That front end is so eager to turn, the back so eager to make a mess of things <3

Which model year is your MR2? Apparently there were a lot of revisions for it.
Bonus factory purple MR2.^

Mine’s an early ‘91. As in, a 3-digit production number in the VIN. Means it’s one of the first thousand SW21s in the US market :) The ‘91 and ‘92 model years have among the most unforgiving of suspension setups on any MR2. ‘93 was when Toyota revised it to be more manageable (but arguably a little less sharp in the handling department.)
If I ever find that purple on my local Craigslist, I’m going to make a financially reckless decision pretty quickly... That looks fantastic!

Mine, with 130 hp, is always ready to drift at autocross events. I’m still learning to just apply MORE THROTTLE if it steps out.

Ahhh. That is kinda far :( Maybe some Opponauts on the east coast have MR2s?

If you’d like to post on Oppo, just comment on one of the linked articles from this post and ask for authorship :)

Yeah, I never buy site unseen so it’s not a real issue, I’ll still be testing one before I buy it.

I test drove an MR2 almost 2 years before I bought mine. The original I test-drove was in good condition, and that helped me figure out my criteria for what I’d buy. Being patient and searching Craigslist for a long time definitely paid off.

Haha! That’s the way! 130hp isn’t much but if any car can exploit that, it’s this one.
